Throwback Thursday: commencement in a tumultuous time

Fifty years ago this week, Yale celebrated its 269th commencement, just weeks after the campus and New Haven were gripped by the May Day protests. In his baccalaureate address, President Kingman Brewster Jr. ’41 commended students for their civility in extreme times: “A decent respect for the opinions and feelings of others, seasoned occasionally with a sense of humor, has been your secret weapon.”
