On Friday, the last quarter mile of the Farmington Canal Greenway in New Haven was officially opened to cyclists and pedestrians. Built on the site of a former canal-turned-railroad, the trail extends north all the way to Northampton, Massachusetts, with a few gaps still to be filled along the way. The final local portion, from Temple Street to the terminus at Orange and Grove, was designed by the firm of architect Dean Sakamoto ’98MEnvD; it features a stair-and-ramp connection to the Audubon Arts District and a block-long tunnel (pictured) enlivened with displays detailing the history of the canal line.
