Forty years ago this month, the Class of 1986--and president A. Bartlett Giamatti '60, '64PhD--said goodbye to Yale. Giamatti closed his final baccalaureate address with these words: "It will be, my friends, our shared obligations to reject the doctrinaire and to remain open-minded as we seek to make the shape of something better, as we continue to engage whatever moral energy we have tapped into at Yale, as we continue to seek to live those values that will better make America civil, cohesive, and free." |
