Now and then: lexicology corner

In our August 1936 issue, we reported that the house at Temple and Grove where dictionary author Noah Webster (Class of 1778) had once lived was to be bought by Henry Ford and moved to Greenfield Village, Michigan. Yale owned the house and had been using it to house students in the Sheffield Scientific School; the university had planned to demolish it to make way for Silliman College before Ford stepped in. Today, an inscription on the Temple Street façade of Silliman marks where the house once stood.  |
