One hundred twenty-five years ago this month, Yale marked its bicentennial in a four-day celebration capped off by an academic procession and ceremony at which the university awarded 62 honorary degrees, most notably to Theodore Roosevelt (left, with Yale president Arthur Twining Hadley), who had become president of the United States just a month earlier on the death of William McKinley. In accepting the honor, the Harvard-educated Roosevelt declared that “I have never yet worked at a task worth doing that I did not find myself working shoulder to shoulder with some son of Yale.” |
