A glowing 2,000-pound specimen of quartz greets visitors at David Friend Hall, the Peabody Museum’s new gem and mineral gallery, which opened yesterday. The hall was funded by a gift from David Friend ’69, a mineral enthusiast and founder of the data storage company Carbonite.
