Throwback Thursday: timeless turtle

Our April 23, 1926 cover featured the fossilized skeleton of an Archelon—an ancient sea turtle—on display at the Peabody Museum, which had just opened four months earlier. The Archelon fossil is still a favorite 100 years later: the newly renovated Peabody features it suspended from the ceiling of the central gallery (second photo), pursued by a predatory Tylosaurus. The Archelon is missing its right rear flipper; the tableau suggests how that might have happened.
